Principal's Corner

August 2021

Greetings Blue Bishop Parents and Guardians,

It is my pleasure to welcome you back to “in-person” learning in the 2021-2022 school year! Never thought I would be saying that! But then this year has brought us all many “Never thoughts.” Nonetheless, I am glad that your children are returning, as we embark on an exciting year of teaching and learning at Asbury Park High School.

After the last year of functioning in a fully virtual, and then hybrid setting we are excited to return to five full days of in-person instruction in the building. The Asbury Park School District is planning and implementing a thoughtful reopening of schools after all of the COVID-19 related closures. Due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic we will continue to implement mitigation measures as established by the NJDOH and the CDC. This will include the requirement for all students and staff to wear masks while indoors and while riding buses, social distancing of at least 3feet between students where possible, and regular handwashing and/or access to hand sanitizers. All visitors to our building will also be required to wear masks. We will continue to implement mitigation measures as our Acting Superintendent determines are needed, to ensure that our staff and students’ safety and well-being are prioritized.

This year we will renew our commitment to excellence in all that we do, as we seek to provide world class instruction daily with the expectation that all students can learn and succeed. We will continue to provide students with opportunities to address academic deficiencies, to build numeracy and literacy skills, to make up missing credits, to be college or work force ready, and to have the opportunity to participate in advanced academic classes. We will continue to implement initiatives to promote teaching and learning, and to engage all of our stakeholders in the process of educating our students. A major initiative for the 2021-2022 school year is to address our student’s learning loss from school closures due to COVID-19 and summer recess. We look forward to partnering with our stakeholders in this effort which will positively impact student performance in every content area, and in their overall academic growth and development.

I am extremely excited about everything this new school year has to offer and look forward to working collectively with all families to ensure that our students are provided with the best educational experience possible to be critical thinkers, responsible citizens, and prepared to be successful in their endeavors after high school. The Asbury Park High School family is committed to excellence and being a world class institution of teaching and learning.

The first day of school for your child will be Thursday, September 9, 2021. Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th are half days. If your child is in grades 7-8, their day will begin at 7:27am and end at 12:07pm. If they are 9-12, their day begins at 9:00am and ends at 1:40pm. Monday, September 13, 2021 will be the first full day of school; which is 7:27am-2:00pm for 7-8, and 9:00am-3:33pm for 9-12.

I look forward to building relationships with all stakeholders throughout this year and encourage you to become active members of our Blue Bishop family.  Let us continue to ensure that Asbury Park High School continues to put students first and prepare educators for success. Let us continue to inspire futures. I wish you all a magnificent school year! Be well and be safe.

 Yours in Education,

Kathy A. Baumgardner
